about

originally released as a cassette (edition of 100) from planted tapes.

Colorado-based guitarist Cody Yantis has a gift for cinematic improvisation, his pieces often hinting at scenes of vast, lonely landscapes or distant memories. His recently released cassette on Denver-based label Planted Tapes, Resonant Memory, cloaks disfigured Americana in heavy fog by way of layers. His process is symbiotic between the recording and the performance, often relying on him manipulating recordings in order to play while playing in order to record. It's a cyclical set-up that allows him to walk a tight-rope between natural and artificial.

Resonant Memory feels like a slightly more hopeful take on his cassette from last year, Starvation Winter, relying on less negative space and anticipation than his comparatively spacious American Surfaces. He plays with the kind of spare-but-bold style that made Neil Young’s Dead Man soundtrack so haunting, but layers it between warbling scraps of banjo, reversed strings, and solitary ambience. If you dug the Padang Food Tigers LP from last year, you owe it yourself to give a listen. – Matt Sullivan, AdHoc

about

Cody Yantis Santa Fe, New Mexico

Instrumental, improvisational, and often string-based, the works of Cody Yantis tend to reside in the margins between tonality and noise. Experiences and ideas of environment provide consistent motivations as Yantis explores what David Teague has called "people suiting posture to place." A member of Saguache and Tilth, he also writes and works in visual media. ... more
